Important California rules
Prima facie speed limits
25 mph in residential and business districts, 15 mph in alleys and at blind intersections, even when no sign is posted.
Provisional licensing
Drivers under 18 may not transport passengers under 20 or drive between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. during the first 12 months.
Lane splitting
California is the only state that explicitly permits motorcycle lane splitting — expect motorcycles between lanes in slow traffic.
Hands-free only
Handheld phone use is prohibited for all drivers; drivers under 18 may not use any device, hands-free included.
How to study for the California exam
- The California handbook leans heavily on signs and right-of-way — build those two categories first.
- Under-18 applicants take a longer exam with more questions on provisional restrictions.
- You may retake the written test after a waiting period, but three failures require a new application.
